Spirit Detective:
Yusuke Urameshi, a typical street punk is killed in a car accident after saving a child’s life. Which is a surprise for everyone including the Spirit World. A ferry girl named Botan appears to Yusuke when he awakens as a ghost and tells him that he has a chance to be resurrected. Yusuke at first believes that his being dead is a good thing. But after seeing his loved ones cry over him he decides to give life a second chance.
Botan takes Yusuke to the Spirit Realm where he meets Koenma. Koenma gives Yusuke a golden egg. Koenma tells him that the egg will feed off his Souls Energy. If he is good so will the beast inside, but if he is bad the beast will swallow him. Botan reminds Yusuke that his body will be cremated if he doesn’t tell his loved ones to stop the funeral. Yusuke contacts his childhood friend Keiko. Just to make sure she understood the message he possesses his rival’s body and tells her again that she needs to stop the funeral. Yusuke’s body is now in a coma
Kuwabara and his three friends get in trouble rescuing Keiko from some thugs from a rival school. The teacher scolding them threatens Kuwabara’s friend Okubo’s job. Kuwabara demands that Okubo be left out of the situation. So the teacher makes a bet that Okubo can keep his job if Kuwabara doesn’t fight for a week. The next day the teacher adds to the bet saying that if the four of them score fifty percent or higher on the next test Okubo can keep his job. Kuwabara manages to succeed on the test but the teacher erases Kuwabara’s last answer. The school principal however forces the teacher to correct the answer.
Requirements for lovers
Botan informs Yusuke that an investigator was coming to check on him. At that moment a girl named Sayaka appears. Sayaka wants check out Keiko because she is unsure of the relationship between her and Yusuke. Keiko goes to Yusuke’s house and looks after his body. When she leaves to go grocery shopping someone sets Yusuke’s apartment on fire. Yusuke panics since his body is still in there. Keiko runs in to go retrieve Yusuke’s body but quickly becomes trapped in the burning building. Sayaka tells Yusuke that he can save Keiko by throwing the egg into the fire. But however if he does he will never be able to come back to life. Yusuke throws the egg and Keiko is able to get Yusuke’s body to safety with the help of Kuwabara. Koenma appears and says that he’s decided to bring Yusuke back to life anyway
Yusuke’s Back
Koenma tells Yusuke that he can return the next day, but he needs to tell three of the people that want him back the most to kiss him before midnight. Or else he wouldn’t have another chance for a little over fifty years. Yusuke tries to tell them but none of them seem to get the message. Finally Botan possess Keiko’s mother and tells Keiko that Yusuke needs to be revived by midnight. Keiko arrives just in the nick of time letting Yusuke awaken. Yusuke spends the next day getting used to being back among the living. Walking into a coffee shop he listens into a conversation between Kuwabara and some boys from a rival school. One of the boys threatens to kill Kuwabara’s kitten but Yusuke steps in and rescues it. Yusuke runs after one of the boys and knocks him out. A little demon comes out of the boys mouth and Yusuke manages to catch it. Botan arrives and tells Yusuke he has been appointed Spirit Detective.
Three Monsters
Yusuke goes back to school and the first thing that happens is that he’s accused of theft. Koenma appears and says the person punishing him is the real thief. Then he informs Yusuke that three thieves have broken into the great vault at the Gate of Judgment and teaches Yusuke a new power. The Spirit Gun. Yusuke goes out looking for the theives and manages to find them in a clearing. Kurama says he wants to leave the group. The other two thieves have mixed feelings about this. Gouki says that Kurama can’t keep the Mirror he stole. Before things got ugly Yusuke steps in and tells them to give him the items they took from the Spirit World. Kurama walks away and Hiei disappears. Yusuke gets into a fight with Gouki but Gouki turns into his full demon form and over powers Yusuke.
Gouki and Kurama
Botan manages to rescue Yusuke just in time and tells him that she has been granted Human form while Yusuke’s working on his cases. Yusuke leaves to take on Gouki again. Gouki tries to kill Yusuke and Botan but Yusuke jams Gouki’s mouth open with a piece of wood then fires his Spirit Gun. Yusuke earns back the Orb of Basst. Returning home they run into Kurama. Kurama tells them he wishes to make a bargain. If Yusuke could wait three days he would give him the Mirror. Yusuke decides to hear Kurama out. But Botan is a bit more skeptical of Kurama’s motives. The three days pass and Yusuke meets up with Kurama at the Hospital. Kurama tells Yusuke that his human name is Shuichi Minamino and that he took the mirror to save his human mother. But he will need to give his life in exchange for his wish. Yusuke offers his life in exchange for Kurama’s. The mirror however chooses to fulfill Kurama’s wish and not to take anyone’s life.
The Three Eyes of Hiei
Keiko catches Yusuke and Botan conversing and thinks that Yusuke has fallen in love with someone else. Angrily she walks home but is abducted by Hiei. Yusuke’s demon compass tells him that Hiei is near by. Botan joins Yusuke and tells him that Keiko has been kidnapped. They arrive at Hiei’s hide out. Hiei releases Keiko for the Mirror of Darkness and the Orb of Baast. Hiei then tauntingly says that Keiko is still his and points out a mark on her forehead. He tells them that the sword he stole was the shadow sword and that it will turn whom ever it cuts into a demon. And that the only antidote is in the hilt of the sword. Yusuke tries to get it but Hiei proves to be quiet the challenge. Kurama appears and saves Yusuke’s life. Yusuke defeats Hiei and Koenma is punished for letting the artifacts get stolen.
The Search Begins
Yusuke is told that he needs to go visit an old woman psychic named Genkai who is looking for someone to pass her powers to. Botan tells Yusuke a demon named Rando will be trying to get Genkai’s power. Yusuke is reluctant because he’d be giving up a three day weekend. Botan tells Yusuke that if he does the mission he will get a ticket to a fighting match. Yusuke eagerly accepts the mission. When he arrives he finds a large crowd and Kuwabara. Genkai comes out and says the first task will be the drawing of lots. The lots however are made from a special paper that turns red if the person has enough Spirit Energy. After this Genkai leads the first task’s winners to a room filled with video games. She tells them that the three games they’re going to play will test their Spirit Power. The twenty winners from that test are taken to a large forest. Genkai tells them that they need to run to a giant tree on the other side. Yusuke runs straight through the forest and encounters a huge demon bat. Yusuke defeats it and arrives a little after the time limit. Kuwabara informs Yusuke of this but Genkai decides to make an exception and lets Yusuke participate.
Kuwabara's Spirit Sword
Genkai takes the eight fighters to another building and lights only one lamp in the room. She tells them in this test they will fight in complete darkness. Kazamaru the red ninja goes first against Kuroda the assassin. Kazamaru blows Kuroda away with a Spirit Blast. Yusuke feels Botan near by and goes to see her. Kuwabara thinking Yusuke is chickening out sees Botan and falls in love with her. Genkai threatens to disqualify the two boys if they don’t get back into the building. A young boy named Shorin fights and defeats a Chinese wanderer named Chin Po. Kuwabara is up next against a samurai named Musashi. Musashi seems to pummel Kuwabara easily. Kuwabara manages to brake off a piece of Musashi’s bokan and materializes it into a sword of spirit energy. Yusuke is next up against martial arts expert Kibano.
Hard Fights for Yusuke
Yusuke fights against Kibano but the odds don’t seem to be in his favor. Miraculously Yusuke manages to win by slipping a cigarette into Kibano’s belt and used that as a target for his Spirit Gun. Genkai then puts Yusuke up against Kazamaru. The group is led up to an ancient battle field for their final tests. Kazamaru at first has the upper hand by throwing shiriken throwing stars at Yusuke. The stars follow Yusuke’s energy, Yusuke drastically resorts to running at Kazamaru. Kazamaru prepares to fire his Spirit Energy at Yusuke, but Yusuke suddenly disappears. Kazamaru is hit with his own weapons and loses. Kuwabara and Botan find Yusuke floundering in the mud and learned that his unexpected disappearances was because he had fallen into one of the small water holes in the field. Since Kazamaru did not turn into a demon that means by default Shorin is Rando and he will be facing off against Kuwabara.
Shorin at first looks like he is going to be easy to defeat. Shorin then unexpectedly turns the tides and causes Kuwabara shrink to the size of a doll. Shorin then sadistically starts braking Kuwabara’s bones. Yusuke angrily runs at Shorin. Shorin tosses Kuwabara’s limp body at Yusuke and then returns Kuwabara to his normal size. Yusuke and Botan find Kuwabara struggling to remain alive. Yusuke is then put against Shorin. Yusuke defeats Shorin and Shorin turns into Rando.
Yusuke vs Rando: 99 Attacks
Rando is confused about what attacks to try out on Yusuke. He decides to bind Yusuke up in Spirit Energy Threads and demonstrates their durability by slamming Yusuke around for a little while. Then he hangs Yusuke upside-down from a tree and summons some demonic fish. Rando uses the Spirit Gun and sends Yusuke into the water. Kuwabara send his spirit to insult Yusuke. Yusuke summons enough energy to free himself and slay the fish. Yusuke hits Rando with the Spirit Gun and collapses in exhaustion. Rando starts the shrinking chant but unfortunately for him he start to shrink instead of Yusuke. Yusuke wins the tournament and is forced to stay with Genkai for six months training.

Genbu, the Stone Beast
The four Spirit Detectives have entered the Saint Beasts castle. They are slowly getting crushed by the Gate of Betrayal. Yusuke convinces Hiei to go pull the switch that would stop the gate. Hiei does and the friends escape. As they travel further into the Castle, Yusuke asks Kurama what he knows of the Saint Beasts. One of the Saint Beast summons them to a room and they find Genbu the Beast of Stone. Kurama chooses to step forward but he doesn’t attack. Yusuke warns Kurama he’s being attacked from behind. Kurama is seriously wounded but continues to fight. Kurama then summons his weapon, the Rose Whip, and slices Gembu to pieces. Gembu pulls himself to back together only to fire himself at Kurama. Kurama sees a glowing rock among the rubble that’s flying at him. Kurama steps into line of fire and grabs it. Genbu restores himself but his body parts are misplaced. Kurama shows him the glowing rock before destroying it, and thus destroying Gembu.
Byakko, the White Tiger
The second beast meets them at a platform which he quickly destroys with the sound of his roar. Kuwabara volunteers to take on Byakko. Byakko sends out some monsters made from his hair. Kuwabara has trouble fighting them but finally defeats them. Kuwabara then starts to fight Byakko and it looks like a battle he can’t win.

Kuwabara continues to fight Byakko and manages to defeat him. But Byakko is anything but dead yet. Byakko invites Kuwabara and his friends to his lair. They arrive at a room full of lava. All around the room are these platforms. Byakko is standing on a platform at the back of the room. Kuwabara jumps on the platforms which are quickly destroyed by Byakko. Finally there is only one platform between Kuwabara and Byakko. Kuwabara jumps but falls just short of Byakko’s platform. He commands his sword to get longer which he uses as a vault to defeat Byakko. Byakko is thrown in the lava and Kuwabara seems to as well. Fortunately Kuwabara is still alive because the bandages he has around his waist managed to snag onto a crack in the platform.
Seiryu, the Blue Dragon
The group continues on until they reach a set of doors. Kurama says that only one door will lead them to the next beast but the others will lead to their deaths. Kuwabara uses his Spirit Energy to find the right door. They soon find themselves in the presence of the third beast, Seiryu. Hiei volunteers to take out Seiryu and does so by slicing him sixteen times. Suzaku the final Beast is fed up with watching his soldiers get defeated. His pet phoenix Marugu tells him that Yusuke has a girlfriend named Keiko. Suzaku summons the infected humans to go kill her.

Yusuke and the others arrive at the watch tower. The group is held back by plant like zombies. The foursome create a human ladder so that Yusuke could go fight Suzaku. Yusuke reaches the top and sees Keiko on the screen in Suzaku’s tower. Suzaku uses his power over lightning on Yusuke.
Seven Way to Die
Suzaku makes the situation harder by splitting into to seven copies of himself. And tortures Yusuke by making him watch Keiko supposedly die. Genkai tells Yusuke through telepathy that Keiko and Botan aren’t dead.
Yusuke's Sacrifice
Yusuke uses his Shot Gun on Suzaku. Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei arrive to see Yusuke blow away Suzaku, Marugu, and the flute. Kurama tells Kuwabara that Yusuke had burned away much of his life energy and doesn’t have enough to keep his body alive. Kuwabara offers his Spirit Energy. Three days later Yusuke wakes up at Kuwabara’s house. Keiko and Botan walk in glad to see Yusuke awake. Keiko makes Yusuke promise to tell her when he’s going on one of his cases.
Yusuke and Kuwabara are enjoying their summer vacation when Botan arrives and tells them that Koenma has been kidnapped. They go to the Spirit World and see a video of a demon snatching Koenma and demanding the golden seal as ransom. Botan explains the golden seal is so valuable that if it were to fall in the wrong hands King Enma would be exiled from the Spirit World. Yusuke takes the seal and says he wouldn’t let it fall in the wrong hands. On their way they get attacked by many demons who want the seal. Finally they make it to the location where Koenma’s being held. A kid named Koashura demands the seal which Yusuke gives obediently. Suddenly Koashura’s servant says that he is the one who controls the Spirit World. Turns out the Servant known as Garuga was really a convict named Yasha. Yasha merrily trounces Yusuke. And when ever Yusuke uses his Spirit Gun it’s reflected back at him. Yusuke manages to get Yasha into the Lava sealing Yasha’s chest plate. Yasha is then blown away by Yusuke’s Spirit Gun. Koashura tells everyone that he wanted to get revenge on Koenma because Koenma stole the girl he had a crush on.
Lamenting Beauty
Yusuke gets a video tape from Hiei stating their next case. Yusuke asks Kuwabara if he could watch it at his house since Yusuke’s VCR was broken. Kuwabara agrees on one condition. That he not be pulled into any more Spirit Detective stuff. They watch the video and Kuwabara falls madly in love with the girl they are to rescue. Fortunately for him he runs out the door before the end of the tape because Koenma states that Yukina is Hiei’s sister.
The Toguro Brothers who are working for the dastardly evil Tarukane send out demons to prevent Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan from reaching Tarukane strong hold. One by one every single one of the demons is beaten. Tarukane’s friends in the Black Black Club wager money on who will succeed. Sakyo had been winning each and every round. The Toguro Brothers then unveil three extremely powerful demons. The Triad.
The Deadly Triad
Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan burst into Tarukane’s home and meet up with the first of the Triad. The three demons of the Triad are easily defeated. This leaves only the Toguro Brothers themselves to contend with.
Kuwabara's Fight of Love
Yusuke and Kuwabara meet up with the Toguro Brothers in a basement arena. The smallest of the two brothers contorts his body to from a sword. The Toguro Brothers seem almost impossible to defeat. But Kuwabara manages to do so when he and Yusuke combine their weapons in one attack. Looking up Botan sees Hiei beating Tarukane. Yusuke tries to tell him to stop but Hiei doesn’t listen. Yukina then begs Hiei to stop because Tarukane’s death isn’t worth it. She then asks Hiei if they had met before. Hiei says no they had not. Kurama who appears mysteriously questions Hiei about why he didn’t tell his sister who he was. Hiei replies that he wants his sister to be happy.
Dark Tournament:
Toguro Returns
Kuwabara is down because Yukina left him to supposedly return to her own world. In the Spirit World, Botan and Koenma learn that the death of the Toguro Brothers has all been an act so that Sakyo could win Tarukane’s fortune. The larger Toguro approaches Yusuke when he’s out on a date with Keiko. Yusuke and Toguro go off to a place where they could have a private chat. Toguro tells Yusuke that their last fight had been staged and that he had only used twenty percent of his strength. Toguro then powers up to sixty-percent and proceeds to destroy the structure around them. Afterward he tells Yusuke of the martial arts competition known as the Dark Tournament. And that Yusuke and his companions were required to attend. If they don’t they would be immediately killed along with their friends and loved ones. Yusuke goes back to Genkai and trains with her. Kurama and Hiei train Kuwabara to prepare him for the tournament. Two months later Yusuke meets up with his three friends and has a mysterious masked person with him as their fifth fighter.
The Dark Tournament Begins
Yusuke falls asleep on the boat ride to hanging neck island. For entertainment the captain says the preliminaries would be held on his ship. One fighter from each of the teams fights on a ring in the center of the ship. The Masked fighter goes as a representative of the Urameshi Team and defeats every demon in the ring using the shot gun earning the Urameshi Team the right to fight in the tournament. Botan is confronted by Keiko and Shizuru about why Kuwabara and Yusuke are missing.
First Fight
With Yusuke still asleep Kuwabara is given the position of team captain. Kuwabara decides to take on the first opponent a child like demon named Rinku. Rinku bounces around trying to disorient Kuwabara. Kuwabara then starts to gain the upper hand but turns out Rinku was purposely leaving a trail so that Kuwabara would think he was winning. Kuwabara gets up and Rinku pulls out his weapon, the Serpent Yo-yo.
Flowers of Blood
The fight between Kuwabara and Rinku continues. Rinku ties Kuwabara up in the Yo-yo strings and uses him as a human kite before letting him drop. Kuwabara fortunately used his sword to brake his fall. Rinku and Kuwabara are knocked out of the ring at the same time. Rinku fortunately climbs into the ring before the referee finishes counting to ten. Next up it’s Kurama vrs. Roto. Roto taunts Kurama saying that if he fights his mother would die. Kurama is forced to follow Roto’s demands. Roto brutally pounds Kurama but doesn’t get the satisfaction he wants. Kurama dares Roto to kill his mother. Roto is about to but finds he can’t move. At some point during the match Kurama had placed a seed into Roto’s body which quickly spread without Roto knowing. Roto begs for mercy, but Kurama coldly tells Roto to die. Roto explodes into a bloody but beautiful mass of flowers.
Dragon of the Darkness Flame
The next fight involves Hiei vrs. The team captain. Hiei appears to have been defeated rather easily. Hiei then reveals his newest technique the dragon of the darkness flame. Zeru is incinerated. Two members from the opposing team run for their lives only to be killed by their team mate

A Day in Waiting
The Urameshi Team is given a day to recuperate before their next match. Yusuke spends the day training only to find he can’t fire his Spirit Gun. Kurama spending his day studying their next opponents the Ichigaki team. Toguro beats the living crap out of his first opponents. And the Masked Fighter speaks for the first time.
Percentage of Victory
Kuwabara has a dream about their next opponents. Turns out they are normal humans but they are under the control of Ichigaki and are unable to break free. Koenma appears to inform Yusuke that his Spirit Beast would be hatching soon. Kurama finds Hiei who had been seriously wounded during his fight with Zeru when he summoned the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. They are both obstructed from joining the match by two members of the Ichigaki Team.
Glimpse Beneath the Mask
The fight is under way. Kuwabara and Yusuke struggle to fight the Ichigaki Team. The Masked Fighter gets caught in an attack meant for Yusuke. The Mask gives way to reveal a young girl with pink hair and brown eyes. Kurama and Hiei arrive and tell everyone that Ichigaki had been responsible for everything. Kuwabara is seriously wounded trying to reach the three human fighters. Yusuke gains back his ability to fire his Spirit Gun.
Ambition Destroyed: A Trial By Light
The Masked Fighter stops Yusuke from killing the three fighters and instead heals them with the Spirit Wave. Ichigaki who is determined to have Yusuke’s body to study injects something into his body and becomes a monster. Yusuke pounds him and the three fighters are reunited with their master. Trouble however is far from over because the Urameshi Team is called to fight again this time against Team Masho.
Master of Disguise
Hiei and the Masked Fighter are singled out so they can’t fight during the Match. With Kuwabara wounded that leaves only Yusuke and Kurama left to fight. Kurama chooses to take on the first match against Gama. Gama doesn’t allow Kurama time to summon his weapons and matches Kurama in speed. Gama manages to curse Kurama so he can’t move but Kurama defeats Gama by summoning his whip with his hair. Kurama offers Gama a chance to leave with his life. Gama however refuses the offer and splashes Kurama with his blood before he dies with a final word that Kurama’s power had been sealed away.
When Gama dies Touya the Master of Ice steps forward determined to slay Kurama as retribution for Gama’s death. Gama’s first curse wears off fortunately and Kurama is free to move. But without his power the best he can do is attempt to dodge each of Touya’s attacks. Kurama manages to defeat Touya by placing a shimineki seed into a wound on his body. But passes out afterward. Bakken a cowardly member of the Shinobi who specializes in concealment steps forward and argues that Kurama should continue to fight because he was still on his feet.

Crushing Revenge
Bakken brutally pounds Kurama’s helpless body. Yusuke gets fed up with watching this coward hurt his friend so he threaten to fire his Spirit Gun at Bakken. Bakken realizing Yusuke was seriously willing to disqualify his own team to save Kurama stops his assault. Yusuke steps forward and beats Bakken up for what he did to Kurama. Kurama manages to come to and warns Yusuke that the final two members of Team masho will be the strongest.
Jin, the Wind Master
The fight between Jin and Yusuke is underway. Master of Wind poses quite a challenge because in addition to calling forth powerful tornados around each fist, Jin also has the ability to fly out of range of Yusuke’s fists. With Yusuke nearly out of Spirit Energy, the Spirit Detective has only one choice left. His master’s signature attack.
Reverse Decisions
Yusuke wins his match with Jin but corruption with in the Tournament Committee claims that Koto the Referee had hesitated before taking the ten count ruling the fight with Jin and double loss. With the threat of disqualification looming over his team Kuwabara steps forward to earn a final win for his team. Yukina returns.
A Matter of Love and Death
