Koenma Appears

Yusuke asks Botan where they were going. Botan tells them their going to the Spirit World to see King Enma. When they arrive Yusuke is surprised to see Ogres running about filing papers. Botan leads him to an office and tells someone that she brought Yusuke to see them. Yusuke at first believes King Enma to be invisible because he couldn’t see him. He hears a voice and sees a small child with a pacifier in his mouth.

Yusuke bursts out laughing at the thought that an entire world is run by a toddler. The child corrects him by saying he isn’t King Enma but actually Koenma, King Enma’s son. And though he appears to be a toddler he is actually over seven hundred years old.

Koenma pulls a Gold Egg out of a pocket and tells Yusuke that it’s his test for resurrection. Koenma tells him it’s a Spirit Beasts egg. Yusuke needs to keep the egg with him. But he also gives Yusuke a warning.

“This will be a true and constant test of your character. The things you do and feel will change the monster inside, for better or for worse. If, as would be expected from your files, your Spirit is wicked and cruel, then the beast that hatches will be the same way. It will devour you and you will be lost forever. This, as you might imagine, is a very painful experience.  However, if the energy you emit is good and true, then so will be the Spirit Beast. It will take care of you, and guide you back into your living body. Of course if it sounds too risky you can opt out and remain as a ghost. The choice, Yusuke Urameshi, is yours.”

Botan reminds Yusuke that his funeral was that day. If he didn’t tell his loved ones not to burn his body he would not be able to come back to life. Yusuke asks her how he was going to communicate with them since no one could see him. Botan tells him the solution which was that he could stand at their bed side.

“Human beings are more attuned to the supernatural when they’re asleep, and so ghosts can talk to people in their dreams.”

Yusuke tries his mother first but she’s having a drunken fit so he decides to try Keiko. He finds Keiko crying in her sleep. He tells Keiko that he’s coming back and that she needs to stop the funeral. Keiko wakes up with a start and is surprised not to see Yusuke in the room. The next morning Keiko stops by Yusuke’s house to see how Yusuke’s mother was fairing. Yusuke’s mother tells her she had a dream where Yusuke was in this world full of Ogres and that he kept beating them up until they revered him as their leader.

Yusuke realizes that Keiko didn’t understand the message so he asks if there was another way. Botan takes Yusuke to see Kuwabara who is hanging out with his friends. Kuwabara panics when he feels their presence. Turns out Kuwabara has been Spiritually Aware since he was a small child. Yusuke is reluctant but Botan informs him that Kuwabara is his only hope to reach Keiko. Botan also warns him that he has an hour to find Keiko and warn her.

Yusuke possesses Kuwabara and goes running. He stops at Keiko’s family’s restaurant and tries to tell Keiko’s parents that he needs to see her. They think him to be someone who wanted to tease their daughter so they throw him out. Yusuke then tries to find Keiko elsewhere or at least someone who could relay the message to her. Unfortunately he runs into a group of thugs who want to beat him up. Yusuke tries to tell them that he’s not who they think he is but they don’t believe him. Yusuke has to beat the thugs up so he can get past them. Next he runs into a much larger tougher group of thugs. Yusuke has to fight to get past them but he also gets pounded in the process.

Just when Yusuke think hope is gone he sees Keiko’s friends. He decides to go ask them where he could find Keiko. The two girls look at him and run away screaming. Keiko then comes out of a shop and wonders where her friends went. Yusuke doesn’t want the same reaction from Keiko as he had received from her friends so he is a little hesitant about talking to her. Knowing his time will be up in a matter of moments he walks up to Keiko and grabs her chest. Keiko angrily slaps him and is surprised to see someone else instead of Yusuke. Yusuke tells her it’s really him and that he was barrowing someone’s body temporarily so that he could speak with her. Keiko tells him that no matter what form he takes she would always recognize him because there are things she would recognize right off and never forget in a hundred years.

Yusuke gives her his message and hugs her before he loses his hold on Kuwabara’s body. Kuwabara comes too and is confused about where he is. He notices Keiko hugging him and hugs her back. Keiko realizes that she is no longer hugging Yusuke and thus slaps Kuwabara.

Keiko at once rushes to Yusuke’s house to warn Yusuke’s mother not to burn her son’s body. Yusuke’s mother tells her that she had opened the casket to slap Yusuke once again for leaving her, but found Yusuke wasn’t dead but in a coma. The two women rejoice at this. Yusuke pulls out the egg and notices it’s glowing some what. Yusuke believes he only did good deeds that day. Botan slyly hints that Yusuke did beat up a lot of people.
